Abstract:

In the present study, previous reported smut fungi of Iran were reviewed. For this purpose, all specimens being present in the fungus section of Herbarium Ministerii Iranici Agriculturae "IRAN" as well as some newly collected ones were studied. Moreover, all taxonomic and or floristic papers so far published for smut fungi of Iran, were considered. Important characteristics such as: host plant(s), symptoms (sorus), spore morphology (attachment, size, shape, color, wall structure, ornamentation and sheath), immature spores, sterile cells and spore germination were used for the identification of each specimen. This paper covers 76 species of smut fungi (Ustilaginales, sensus HAWKSWORTH et al. 1995) belonging to 13 genera, i. e. Antracoidea (2 spp.), Entyloma (10 spp.), Farysia (1 sp.), Microbotryum (2 spp.), Moesziomyces (1 sp.), Neovossia (1 sp.), Sorosporium (1 sp.), Sporisorium (13 spp.), Tilletia (6 spp.), Tracya (1 sp.), Urocystis (17 spp.), Ustilago (19 spp.) and Vankya (3 spp.). In all, 122 taxa of higher plants are considered as their hosts, out of which 74 taxa belong to the Poaceae family. This paper also provides a key for the separation of genera existing in Iran. All the genera and their relation species were described and inserted alphabeticaly.
